  • Peter Michelman

    Peter has been a regular member of the Asheville Chess Club for well over a decade. Originally from New York, Peter has played in major events all over the country. Most recently, Peter won the open section of Asheville’s own Land of the Sky XXXVI in early 2024.

    Peter also has his own granola company, and you can always count on him to have some on hand.

  • Morris Saxe-Smith

    Morris joined the Asheville Chess club in 2019. Hailing from Pennsylvania, Morris loves the game of chess and has been playing in tournaments for 17 years.

    Morris teaches chess and is available for individual chess coaching, especially for someone who is interested in playing in tournaments!

  • T. Kvelashvili

    Tsotne, better known as T., is a recent transplant to the Asheville area. He has quickly become a regular for the Asheville Chess club and one of its strongest players. T has played in various tournaments across the country and is especially fond of Blitz time controls.

    T is available for individual chess lessons and coaching. He has extensive teaching experience in both individual and group settings from his years as a graduate teaching assistant at the University of Tennessee. His current USCF rating is 2051. Bruce is our Vice-President at the Asheville Chess Club. He has been teaching chess to elementary students for 28 years in after-school chess classes. He has taught over 2000 students how to play chess.


Bruce is also the chess teacher for OLLI at UNC Asheville, commonly known as “Senior College”. As Bruce always says, “there is not much difference in teaching a 7 year old or a 70 year old how to play chess”. He has taught chess at OLLI since the end of the pandemic in 2022. Bruce also runs our monthly tournaments on the 1st Wednesday and 3rd Saturday of the month.
